The Ud (or Oud) is a pear-shaped string instrument with 11 or 12 strings grouped in 5 or 6 courses. It is widely used in Persian, Arabic, Turkish, Uzbek, North African, and Middle Eastern music traditions.
The Ud shares similarities with the lute, and both instruments likely descend from a common ancestor — possibly the ancient Barbat. While similar in construction, the Ud is easily distinguished by its smaller neck and lack of frets.
The instrument has also influenced the development of the guitar. The oldest surviving Ud is preserved in the Museum of Musical Instruments in Brussels.
