Ayaz Kala in Khiva

Ayaz Kala - Ancient Castle of Khorezm

Ayaz Kala is one of the largest and best-preserved fortresses of Ancient Khorezm, situated deep in the Kyzylkum Desert around 80 km from Khiva. Built between the 4th century BC and the 7th century AD, this complex of three fortresses illustrates the defensive strength and settlement patterns of Central Asia’s desert civilizations. Its dramatic location on a hilltop offers sweeping views of the surrounding steppe and desert landscapes.

History and Significance

Ayaz Kala was constructed as part of a chain of fortifications to protect the Khorezm kingdom from nomadic incursions. The site consists of three separate fortresses built in different centuries, each reflecting the evolving military strategies of the region. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of residential quarters, storage facilities, and even a garrison, showing that Ayaz Kala was more than just a military outpost—it was a thriving desert settlement.

Architectural Features

The Ayaz Kala complex is composed of Ayaz Kala I, II, and III, each with distinct features:

  • Ayaz Kala I: A rectangular fortress with high defensive walls and watchtowers, built between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC.
  • Ayaz Kala II: Located on higher ground, this fortress had a palace-like structure, likely used by nobility or military commanders.
  • Ayaz Kala III: The most extensive of the three, featuring thick walls, bastions, and inner courtyards, dating back to the 7th century AD.

Tourism and Visiting Information

Today, Ayaz Kala is a popular stop for travelers exploring the “Golden Ring of Ancient Khorezm.” Visitors can hike up to the fortress walls and enjoy panoramic desert views. The nearby Ayaz Kala Yurt Camp also offers tourists a chance to experience traditional nomadic life, making the site both a cultural and natural highlight of Uzbekistan.

Ayaz Kala’s scale, preservation, and stunning desert setting make it one of the most unforgettable ancient sites in Central Asia.
