Guldursun Kala – The Great Fortress of Khorezm

Guldursun Kala is one of the largest and best-preserved fortresses of Ancient Khorezm. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it served as a stronghold against nomadic invasions and played a key role in regional defense. Its sheer size and strategic location demonstrate the importance of Khorezm’s fortified network during the medieval period.

Historical Background

According to chronicles, Guldursun Kala was completed during the reign of Khorezm Shahs as part of a vast defense line. The site reflects both military architecture and urban planning of the Khorezm empire at its height.

  • Rectangular Plan: Covering more than 6 hectares, with four corner towers and multiple gates.
  • Watchtowers & Defenses: Strategically placed towers for archers and defenders.
  • Inner Structures: Remains of residential quarters, storage areas, and possible administrative buildings.
