Janbas Kala in Khiva

Janbas Kala - Ancient Castle of Khorezm

Janbas Kala, meaning “Oblique Fortress,” is one of the most ancient strongholds of Khorezm, dating back to the 4th century BC. Located on the edge of the Kyzylkum Desert, it was a powerful defensive outpost designed to protect Khorezm’s borders. Its ruins provide valuable insight into the region’s earliest fortress-building traditions and military architecture.

History and Significance

Built during the flourishing era of Ancient Khorezm, Janbas Kala served as a military fortification guarding the fertile lands and trade routes. Its early date makes it one of the oldest desert fortresses in the region, predating many other castles of the “Golden Ring of Khorezm.” Archaeological excavations uncovered evidence of storage areas, garrison quarters, and outer defensive walls.

Architectural Features

The fortress is rectangular in shape with strong outer walls and corner towers. Key elements include:

  • Massive Clay Walls: Up to 10 meters thick, providing formidable protection against invasions.
  • Watchtowers: Positioned on the corners, offering wide visibility of the desert plain.
  • Inner Layout: Divided into residential areas and military quarters, indicating long-term occupation.
  • Early Defensive Style: The fortress represents one of the earliest large-scale defensive systems in Khorezm.

Tourism and Visiting Information

Janbas Kala is located about 30 km from Khiva and is often combined with visits to Kyzyl Kala, Tuprak Kala, and Ayaz Kala. The site is relatively untouched by restoration, allowing visitors to experience its authentic ancient atmosphere. Best times to visit are spring and autumn, when the desert climate is most pleasant.

Exploring Janbas Kala provides a glimpse into the very beginnings of fortress-building in Khorezm, making it a must-see for those interested in Central Asian archaeology and history.
