Barakhan Madrasah
Barakhan Madrasah is one of Tashkent’s most iconic religious and architectural monuments, located within the Khast Imam Complex in the Old City (Eski Shahar). Dating back to the 16th century, this stunning structure was commissioned by Navruz Ahmad Khan, the then ruler of Tashkent and a descendant of the Shaybanid dynasty. The madrasah was named after him and became an important center for Islamic education and spiritual scholarship during the Shaybanid era.
Architectural Highlights
Barakhan Madrasah is a striking example of Timurid-influenced architecture, featuring:
- A majestic pishtaq (portal) with turquoise and blue mosaic tiles
- Two symmetrical domed chambers flanking the entrance
- A spacious inner courtyard surrounded by students’ rooms (hujras)
- Detailed Arabic inscriptions and geometric patterns adorning the façade
- Though some parts have been restored, the madrasah has preserved much of its historical authenticity, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in Islamic architecture and Central Asian history.
