Karnay is a long, straight trumpet traditionally used in ceremonial and festive occasions in Uzbekistan. It is made of brass or copper and can reach lengths of over 2 meters, producing a powerful, resonant sound that can be heard from great distances.
The Karnay plays a central role in weddings, public announcements, and national celebrations. It is typically played in pairs or groups, often accompanied by Doira drums. Although it has no valves or keys, it can produce various tones by controlling the breath and embouchure.
In Uzbekistan, the Karnay is considered a national symbol of celebration and pride. It reflects the country’s rich musical heritage and the importance of traditional instruments in cultural expression. The instrument is also found in neighboring countries like Iran and Tajikistan, where it serves similar ceremonial roles.
