Tor (or Tar) is a Persian long-necked, waisted string instrument that is shared by many cultures and regions, including the Republic of Azerbaijan, Iran, Georgia, and other parts of the Caucasus region.
The word "Tar" means "string" in Persian and possibly in other languages influenced by Persian.
The modern form of the Tar appeared in the mid-18th century in Persia. It features a double-bowl-shaped body carved from mulberry wood and is covered with a thin membrane of stretched lamb-skin.
