Common types of pin bowling include ten pin, candle pin, duck pin, nine pin, and five pin. The historical game of skittles is the forerunner of modern bowling.
In bowling, the goal is usually to get the ball as close to the tee as possible. The surface of a bowling alley can be grass, gravel or synthetic. Lawn bowls, bocce bowls, carpet bowls, pétanque bowls, and pétanque bowls come in many varieties for both indoor and outdoor use. Curling is also associated with bowls.
