Khanqah of Khoja Zaynuddin in Bukhara

Khoja Zaynuddin

Khanqah of Khoja Zaynuddin

The architectural ensemble of Khoja Zayniddin is an architectural ensemble located in the southwestern part of the shakhristan of Bukhara, in the same named guzar.

The architectural ensemble belongs to the first half of the 16th century. It was built by Khoja Zaynuddin. During the restoration in 1913, on behalf of the last Bukhara Amir Alim Khan (1910-1920), the old spillway in the southeastern part was replaced with new marble.

The architectural ensemble consists of a khanak mosque and a house. The building (total dimensions 30.4x18.8 meters, height 16.6 meters) combines the hall of the mosque, the mazar of the builder, meteb and several hujras for pilgrims. A khanaka mosque is raised on a brick platform.

The main southern facade, once decorated with glaze mosaics, is accented by a portal with a deep pentahedral niche. Its wings have vaulted niches with doorways to the corner rooms. The north and south facades are circled by aivan on wooden columns with stacked stalactites and capitals.

In the western facade, facing the intra-quarter street, a deep vaulted niche is arranged. It contains the mazar of Khoja Zaynuddin, or Hajai Turk, above it stand special poles (tug), which indicate the graves of saints.

Rich multi-color decor covers the interior of the hall from the floor to the zenith of the dome. The lower parts of the walls are decorated with mosaic panels.

Above the walls, the mihrab, the bowl of the dome and the arch are covered with floral and vegetable paintings using the kundal technique with a gilded relief on a blue background and a blue "gold" ornament. A belt of Quranic inscription is placed along the perimeter of the walls at the base of the dome.

In the courtyard of the khanaka mosque were the cells (hujras) of the Khoja Rahmatullah madrasah and were placed for ritual ablutions (taharat room).

House - a large rectangular pool with cut corners - is made of stone blocks. It is made in the form of a stylized open mouth of a dragon. The upper and lateral surfaces of the spillway are covered with carved geometric and floral ornaments. Between them is an inscription informing about the time and donor of the repair.
